One Of The Very Best, Nikon Camera Lens
Nikon Camera Lenses
When you say “Nikon” most people think “camera". But did you know that Nikon is a world leader in the
manufacture of professional grade microscopes used in academic and research and development laboratories? So while
the public may think of Nikon as a camera company, those in the know have seen them as a lens company all the way
back to their beginnings in 1917.
At the close of the Second World War Nikon began to expand into the consumer market, using its optical prowess
to introduce the first Nikon camera in 1948. And the rest, as they say, is history. Although Canon really gives
them a run for their money, Nikon camera lenses are still viewed by many of the world’s best photographers as the
premier offering on the market.
Nikon Camera Lenses: SLR vs DSLR
You know the world of photography has gone digital. So what happens to those of us who currently own high
quality SLR cameras? The good news is that an SLR lens will work with a DSLR camera body. SLR bodies are meant for
film so they don’t have the same guts as a DSLR body but the lens in another story since it’s simply an optical
device.
The bad news is that you have to stay within your brand. So those Nikon camera lenses you bought for your Nikon
SLR camera will most likely work with a new Nikon DSLR but not with a Canon or a Leica. However, some older lenses
will lose some of their functional capability. How about going the other way? Will you be able to use new DSLR
Nikon camera lenses with your old Nikon SLR camera body?
That depends on the specific lens. DSLR sensors are smaller than a frame of film so if your new lens was mad for
a full frame DSLR camera body, it should work with your old SLR body. Nikon still makes manual lens for the purists
out there who prefer to maintain control over focusing the picture. A standard AF (Auto Focus) lens has a motor
inside the lens that adjusts the focus. Nikon’s Non-AF lens let you do your own thing. They also offer a
Perspective Control (PC) lens where you can manually control perspective and distortion. As you would expect, the
majority of their lens offerings are Auto Focus.
Nikon Camera Lenses: Auto Focus
Their core offerings are within standard lenses, wide angle lenses, telephoto lenses, and zoom lenses. They also
have a variety of close-up lenses and for the real pros out there you can get high powered zoom lenses and
supertelephoto lenses. N
ikon Camera Lenses: Teleconverters
If you want to extend the focus of one of your existing Nikon camera lens they have teleconverters available.
You can actually get up to a 2x increase in focal length by adding one of these to your lens. Nikon’s website has a
compatibility chart which will tell you if your lens can be used with a teleconverter. Good luck with your
pictures!
